![]() ![]() Though, I have my opinions about both of those instances, too, and I think a lot of those grievances were about production, and were improperly channeled against other contestants. I guess to answer your question, Seasons 13 and 14 do have pretty toxic behaviors from contestants-Korina towards Char, and everyone towards Sandhya in Season 13, and the "mean girls" vs Ashley in season 14. If anything I found Ivy far worse than Gretchen, and Ivy had a redemption arc in All-Stars. ![]() She really mellowed out later in the season, especially following what Tim Gunn said to her post-elimination in the backstage lounge, and was the first to comfort Michael Costello during his breakdown when he was eliminated before fashion week. The judges asked who the weakest on the team was, and they said Michael Costello. I didn't find her behavior in the group challenge particularly egregious on rewatch. Any bullying Gretchen did, Santino did 10x worse. She had perhaps an abrasive personality, but so did a lot of other designers who people loved and still love, Santino included. Nothing she did really warranted, in my opinion, my vitriolic hatred towards her in 2010. When it initially aired when I was 17, I hated Gretchen, but on rewatch during COVID, I found her very villain lite, I guess. I had the total opposite reaction upon rewatching Season 8. And Santino was a toxic presence, but no one joined him in that behavior and it really only hurt him. She and some of the other designers would say that he didn't belong there and couldn't sew and wasn't talented, but what did they want him to do about it? Say "these other designers don't think I should be here, so I'm going to leave this competition"?ĭid this kind of toxic behavior happen in other seasons - one person being bullied and a couple of other contestants leading the charge? (I stopped watching after season 10 until it returned to Bravo, so I'm unfamiliar with those seasons.) There was a little bit of this towards the end of season 5 with Kenley, but that feels a little different because Kenley was a dick who gave as good as she got, but it was still slightly uncomfortable watching three people against one. Tim also did not seem happy having to address unsubstantiated cheating allegations made by Ivy after she'd been eliminated and was clearly bitter about it (and for someone who thought that she was such a better designer than Michael, she was only in the top 3 once and was in the bottom 3 three times before she was finally eliminated). I mean, so bad that Tim Gunn called out Gretchen by name (but by doing that he gave the other designers a chance to blame Gretchen for their poor behavior when they didn't need much of a push to gang up on Michael). I remembered Gretchen and Ivy being obnoxious and treating Michael Costello badly, but I forgot how truly awful they were. I was initially only going to watch the first 5 seasons because the Lifetime episodes just got worse and worse each season, but now I'm on season 8, watching it for the first time since it aired. I've been doing a rewatch of Project Runway on Freevee.
